Enhancing Fleet Safety and Efficiency with SM UK’s HALO® Cycle Minder System

Background

LSS Waste Management Limited is one of the UK’s leading independent providers of waste management, skip hire, and recycling solutions. Serving thousands of companies locally and nationally, LSS operates a diverse fleet across housing and industrial estates as well as in high-traffic urban areas. The company’s commitment to safety and operational excellence led to a recent investment in fleet safety technology, partnering with SM UK to install advanced vehicle monitoring systems, including the innovative HALO® Cycle Minder.

Challenges

Operating large vehicles in confined spaces and dense traffic presented several challenges for LSS Waste Management:
Navigational Difficulties: Drivers faced challenges maneuvering vehicles in tight residential and industrial estates.
Increased Insurance Claims: A lack of evidence in incidents often resulted in shared or unjustified blame placed on LSS drivers.
Limited Previous Solutions: Earlier systems, such as basic forward-facing dash cams, offered poor quality and no real-time monitoring, limiting their utility.

SM UK Solution

To address these challenges, SM UK installed a comprehensive suite of safety and monitoring systems across LSS’s fleet:

1. 4-Camera System with 3G Technology:

  • Forward-facing, rear/reversing, and side-mounted cameras provide a 360-degree view.
  • Real-time access to footage through 3G connectivity, enabling immediate review of incidents.

2. HALO® System:

  • Low-level lighting designed to increase visibility and reduce the risk of collisions.
  • Features ultrasonic sensors, external speakers, and four high-intensity LED lights that flash an amber ‘halo’ on the ground in unison with the vehicle’s indicators.
  • Provides a visual warning to vulnerable road users (VRUs), particularly cyclists and pedestrians, when the vehicle is turning.
  • Helps mitigate challenges such as VRUs wearing headphones, language barriers, or loud road conditions where audible warnings may not be effective.
  • Designed and manufactured in-house by SM UK, the system promotes collaboration between drivers and VRUs to reduce accidents and make roads safer for everyone.

3. Driver-Friendly Display:

  • A 7-inch in-cab monitor offers a live feed and a full 360-degree view, aiding drivers in tight maneuver.

4. SM UK 360 System:

  • Provides a bird’s-eye view via four strategically positioned cameras.

5. Additional Hardware:

  • A 500GB hard drive for storing camera footage, ensuring comprehensive incident documentation.

Results

Enhanced Safety
The implementation of SM UK’s solutions significantly improved safety across the LSS fleet:

  • Reduction in Incident Liability: Incidents initially deemed the fault of LSS drivers decreased by 88% due to clear and actionable video evidence.
  • Improved Driver Awareness: Drivers reported increased confidence navigating tight spaces and dense traffic, with the system’s sensors and displays providing essential visibility.

Operational Benefits

  • Streamlined Incident Management: The 3G-enabled camera system allowed LSS to access footage immediately after incidents, expediting claims and reducing administrative overhead.
  • Regulatory Recognition: During a health and safety audit, LSS impressed inspectors with their proactive adoption of vehicle safety technology.

Fleet-Wide Implementation

Currently, 75% of LSS’s fleet is equipped with the new systems. All future vehicles will include the SM UK HALO® system as standard.

Client Feedback

Ian Grimes, General Manager at LSS Waste Management, praised the seamless installation process and the functionality of the systems:

Ease of Use: “The systems are simple to operate, with clear monitors that make it easier for drivers to navigate tight spaces.”
Driver Behaviour: “Driver awareness of being monitored has encouraged safer driving practices.”
Service Excellence: “SM UK’s project management and aftercare is exceptional. Issues are quickly addressed, ensuring minimal downtime.”
