Turn & Reverse Warning Alarms
Pedestrians and cyclists nearby often have no way of knowing a vehicle is about to reverse or turn until it’s too late. External warning alarms close that gap, alerting people in the danger zone with audible warnings before the vehicle moves. SM UK supplies and fits a range of alarms, including reversing alarms, handbrake warnings, speaking alarms, and turn warnings, with most systems activating only at low speed so they’re not a constant presence on the road.
- Multi-frequency white sound reversing alarm, confined to the danger zone
- Speaking handbrake warning alarm
- Nightshift speaking alarms with time-based cut-out
- Speaking left-side-turn warning alarm
- Most systems active only at low speed
The alarms we fit include:
White sound reversing alarm
A multi-frequency reversing alarm that's directional and instantly locatable, confined to the immediate danger zone rather than carrying broadly across a site. This reduces noise nuisance for nearby residents and workers while still giving a clear warning to anyone close to the vehicle.
Left turn warning alarm
A speaking alarm giving a clear spoken warning to pedestrians and cyclists when the vehicle is turning left, an area where vulnerable road users are most at risk around HGVs.
Nightshift speaking alarm
A real speech reversing alarm with a built-in night-time cut-out, reducing the volume or silencing the alarm between 11:30pm and 7am to limit noise disturbance in residential areas while maintaining full daytime function.
Handbrake warning alarm
A real speech alarm that alerts the driver if the handbrake hasn't been applied, helping prevent vehicle roll-away incidents.
Night-time Cut Out
Reversing and turning alarms are essential for safety, but constant alerts overnight can cause unnecessary disturbance in residential areas. Both the reversing alarm and the side turn warning alarm can be fitted with a night-time cut-out, giving drivers a way to reduce noise during late-night and early-morning operation without losing the alarm altogether.
The reversing alarm cut-out is a 4 minute timer, allowing the driver to mute the alarm temporarily before it automatically resets. The side turn warning cut-out is a simple on/off switch instead. Both reset automatically when the ignition is turned off and on, so the alarm is always restored to full function at the start of a new journey.
FAQs
We’ve answered some of your most frequently asked questions. Don’t find what your looking for? Don’t hesitate to get in touch with a member of our team for expert advise.
Why do most alarms only activate at low speed?
At higher road speeds, an audible turning or reversing alarm isn’t relevant and would just add unnecessary noise. Limiting activation to low speed ensures the alarm is only active during manoeuvring, when the risk to pedestrians and cyclists is highest.
What's the benefit of a white sound alarm over a standard tonal alarm?
White sound alarms use multi-frequency sound that’s directional and confined to the immediate danger zone, making it easier for people nearby to locate the vehicle while reducing noise carrying further than necessary.
Can the alarms be muted at night?
Yes. The reversing alarm uses a 4 minute timed cut-out, and the side turn warning alarm uses a simple on/off switch. Both reset automatically when the ignition is turned off and on, helping limit noise pollution in residential or noise-sensitive areas without affecting daytime operation.
Does the left-side-turn alarm work with my existing indicators?
Yes. It connects to the vehicle’s indicator circuit and sounds automatically when the left indicator is activated.
