Sensors
Ultrasonic detection sensors provide close-range object detection around your vehicle, alerting drivers audibly and visually when something enters the danger zone. SM UK supplies and fits sensors configured for the front, side, corners, or rear of your HGV – individually or in combination for wider coverage.
All systems feature Environment Learning Mode, which filters out false alerts from tow-hooks and other fixed ancillary equipment, so warnings stay meaningful.
- Audible and visual distance warnings
- Flush-mount and underslung fixing options
- Environment Learning Mode to reduce false alerts
- Low speed trigger module available across all systems
- CE and UKCA marked, UNECE R10 compliant
Sensors where you need them most
Side Sensors
An option of a three, four or even seven-sensor system covering the nearside of the vehicle, with 1.0/1.5m detection range. Includes underslung and flush-mount fixings and a self-diagnostic function. Available with low speed trigger module and turn indicator sensor kit for articulated vehicles.
Corner Sensors
A three-sensor system for corner coverage, with 0.6/1.0m detection range. Two levels of sensitivity selectable, with buzzer auto-silence after four seconds if no movement is detected - reducing alert fatigue in slow-moving environments.
Front Sensors
A four-sensor flush-mount system for forward detection, with 2.0/1.0m detection range adjustable down to 0.6m. Quick reaction time with obstacles detected in under 200 milliseconds.
Rear Sensors
A four-sensor system for reversing detection, with 2.5m/0.6m detection range. Graduated visual and audible warning display, with a 50cm compensation range for sensors fitted inboard of the vehicle rear.
In-cab audible and visual warning
The internal alarm works in conjunction with ultrasonic sensors to alert the driver when an object enters the detection zone. An audible warning increases in frequency as the distance closes, prompting the driver to stop or take evasive action. An optional visual display can be added to provide a graduated proximity indication – useful in noisy cab environments where audio alone may not be sufficient.
The buzzer features adjustable volume control and will silence automatically after four seconds if no movement is detected from the object or vehicle, reducing alert fatigue without switching off the system. A self-diagnostic function monitors system health and flags any faults to the driver.
FAQs
We’ve answered some of your most frequently asked questions. Don’t find what your looking for? Don’t hesitate to get in touch with a member of our team for expert advise.
How do ultrasonic sensors differ from radar detection?
Ultrasonic sensors are designed for close-range detection — typically within 2.5m — making them ideal for slow-speed manoeuvres in yards, loading areas, and urban environments. Radar systems cover greater distances and are better suited to detecting vulnerable road users at speed. Many fleets run both for layered protection.
Can the sensors be configured to ignore fixed objects on the vehicle?
Yes. All systems include Environment Learning Mode, which filters out false alerts generated by tow-hooks, body attachments, and other ancillary equipment within the first 100cm of the detection zone. This keeps alerts relevant and reduces driver fatigue.
Can the systems be fitted to articulated vehicles?
Yes. Cable kits are available for truck/trailer configurations, and the side sensor system can be paired with a turn indicator trigger for automatic activation during manoeuvres.
Do the sensors work at any speed?
A low speed trigger module is available across all systems, enabling sensors to activate only below a designated speed. This is particularly useful for preventing alerts during normal road speed where close-range detection isn’t relevant.
What fixing options are available?
Depending on the system, sensors can be flush-mounted or underslung. Our installation team will advise on the best approach for your vehicle type and bodywork.
