September 2018 sees SM UK turn 18 years old! Over the years, we’ve seen slow, but strong and steady growth which we feel is what has helped us get to the level we are at now…and we’re not stopping!
Back in 2000, Steve Macdonald started SM UK as an Electrical Engineer installing beacons and cameras onto HGV vehicles across Yorkshire and the rest of the country. After just under 6 years, in April 2006 the decision was made to take on another engineer to help out with the increasing workload.
With there now been 2 engineers out on the road, the workload began to get even more overwhelming, so in late 2006 the engineering team was extended from 2 to a total of 6 engineers.
Due to the scope of services offered by SM UK, there are a lot of materials involved, and with 13 engineers in 2007 now working on projects across the UK, a ‘central hub’ for parts and stock was required. After a good few months of searching around in early 2009, a suitable office in Bramley was rented, with the capacity to hold stock and house a small team of office staff. This office team was taken on in October of the same year and consisted of an Admin and Bookings team, and an Accounts team. This is when things picked up pace vastly for SM UK.
Within a year, the SM UK team moved to a larger office in Kirkstall, which was of a sufficient size for them to remain for 3 years. In the same year the engineering team was expanded to 17.
As 2012 approached, 5 more auto electrical engineers were added to the SM UK family due to the expansion in operations and the appointment of their first sales man which then meant a new office was required. In September 2013, 13 years after SM UK first started, the business moved to Unit 18 in the Pavillion Business Park, on the outskirts of Leeds City centre. This latest expansion then allowed Steve to focus on the appointment of more engineers, expanding this team to 25 and focus on the direction of the business.
In 2014 and 2015 2 more salesman were added to the sales team to help bring business in from across the UK. SM UK now had a salesman looking after the southern counties, one in the North West and one in the North East thus placing SM UK in front of its competitors as a strong threat.
The next 3 years into 2018 saw further big changes happen at SM UK, including another office move, with the purchase of a second office, the expansion of the engineering team to the largest it’s ever been with 35 engineers.
One of the largest business changes of recent years happened in 2018 when SM UK opened a brand new facility, their first ‘Van Conversion and Service Centre’ based in Gildersome Spur Business Park. Due to the size of the business, this meant the appointment of a full time Marketing Manager for SM UK and a dedicated salesman who will be based at the new Van Conversion Centre.
As 2018 enters its final quarter, changes are still been made at SM UK with 5 engineers now permanently based at the Centre to complete the steady flow of projects passing through the doors, a new website due to be launched very shortly and further internal changes too!
