SM UK have been Shortlisted for a Brake ‘Fleet Safety Award’

Each year, Brake the road safety charity, hold an award ceremony whereby they award companies that are working for the same goal as what they are – an increase in road safety, and a decrease in fatal incidents on the road involving any type of vehicle and VRU’s (vulnerable road users).

Established in 1995, Brake is a charity that operates internationally from its bases in the UK and New Zealand. It coordinates Road Safety Week, inviting participation worldwide, and has many supporters worldwide in communities, companies (particularly those interested in managing their road risk through operation of fleets), emergency services, schools and all other sectors of society. It also provides support services for people bereaved and injured in road crashes and the professionals who care for them, including the emergency services.

This year, SM UK has been shortlisted for an award at their annual awards for their cycle safety system – HALO®. Submitted into the ‘Fleet Safety Product – In-vehicle’ award category.

The HALO® cycle minder package features the following components:

  • Ultrasonic sensors fitted down the nearside of the vehicle
  • An external speaking alarm, which when the left-hand indicator is applied, will broadcast “Warning! Vehicle turning left!” This operates below approx. 15 mph.
  • 4 high intensity LED lights that will illuminate the road down the nearside of the vehicle when driven below approx. 15mph. These will flash in time with the left-hand indicator when applied.
  • As an additional aid, there is a camera fitted to the front wing which points down the side of the vehicle, and the footage of which is shown on a monitor mounted in the cab.

Steve Macdonald, CEO of SM UK had the following to say: “We designed this system to help build the relationship between the HGV driver and any VRU’s. The main feature of the package is the ‘HALO’ light that shines on the floor and we feel this is what sets us apart from our competitors. We are ecstatic that SM UK have been shortlisted for the ‘Fleet Safety Product – in-vehicle’ award with our HALO system. It is a fantastic product which has done exactly as we hoped – improve the relationship between fleet vehicles and cyclist, mainly.”

The winner is announced at an event held at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole in October at a prestigious award ceremony, tickets for which are available through Brake’s website.
